Brazilian agribusiness must invest in production intensification, being boosted by the increasing use of technology in order to have the supply capacity to meet the growing global demand for agricultural products and at the same time protecting the environment.
This was one of the main messages sent by Embrapa’s chairman, Maurício Lopes, in his lecture at GAF Talks, an event held by DATAGRO last Wednesday (29) in São Paulo (SP).
On his panel, which was themed on sustainability, Lopes highlighted that the Brazilian agribusiness must also accelerate the efforts for higher value adding and product specialization. “Today, the consumer society is more demanding and the markets are more sophisticated and competitive.”
According to Embrapa’s chairman, Brazil must work towards building an institutional brand for Brazilian agribusiness in the international community, having as a motto that it is the most sustainable agricultural production in the planet.
Also speaking in the panel, the chairman of the Brazilian Association for Animal Protein (ABPA), Francisco Turra, exemplified the importance of adding value by highlighting that exporting meat is much more interesting from the financial point of view than Brazil exporting grains.
About the recent episode of “Carne Fraca” [Weak Flesh] Operation, Turra strongly defended the animal protein industry and alerted to the fact that the challenge now is to understand in which negotiation conditions the markets are reopened for importing the Brazilian product.
Former Ministry of Agriculture, Roberto Rodrigues, also participated in this panel, highlighting the great advance in productivity that Brazilian agriculture has being through over the last 25 years, being boosted by the use of technology in the field.
According to Rodrigues, from the 1990/91 harvest to the cycle of 2016/17, Brazilian grain production grew 285% and the harvested area increased only by 85%, a fact that, as the former ministry stated, led the country to saving around 86 million hectares of forest.
